Relate contemporary American public attitudes towards overseas military deployment to increasing media coverage.

SUBDOMAIN 111.1 – UNITED STATES HISTORY

Competency 111.1.10: Post–World War II Period – The graduate can describe and discuss the issues, events, and impacts of the post–World War II period in American life.

Objective 111.1.10-12: Relate contemporary American public attitudes towards overseas military deployment to increasing media coverage.

——————————————————————————–

Given:

Media coverage of world events, particularly through television and Internet-based reporting, has increased steadily since the end of the Second World War. Particularly during the conflicts in Vietnam and later in Iraq, citizens with access to television and the Internet have been exposed to increased media coverage of these conflicts. Many have referred to this phenomenon as having “brought the war into American living rooms.” Indeed, many Americans argue that the media counterbalances the power and activities of the U.S. government beyond the system of checks and balances provided for in the U.S Constitution.

Task:

Note: You will need to use additional resources to complete this task.

A. Write an essay (suggested length of 2–4 pages), in which you discuss how media coverage of either the Vietnam conflict or the second Iraq conflict (launched March 20, 2003) has had an impact on public attitudes towards overseas military deployments. In your essay be sure to:

1. Discuss the level of influence the media has had on American perceptions of military activity abroad.

2. Discuss how media coverage of the military has influenced military conduct.

B. Include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
