Develop a Scratch Outline for your Definition paragraph (Chapter 12). A definition is telling what something means. In a definition paragraph, you develop your personal definition of a term of a concept. You can do this by giving several examples or one extended example to support your point made in your topic sentence.

 

Follow these steps:

 

1.    Preview the Writing Assignment 2 on pages 259-260.

 

2.    Select one of the terms provided. Keep in mind that you will be writing a paragraph that defines the one you chose.

 

3.    Generate a tentative topic sentence for your definition paragraph.

 

4.    Identify your term, the class it belongs to, and the special feature that sets the term apart from other members of the class. (Remember not to make statements of announcement or create topic sentences that are too broad or too narrow.)

 

5.    Use a prewriting technique to generate supporting ideas for your topic sentence.

 

6.    Create a scratch outline, as illustrated on pages 25-27 of the textbook.

 

7.    Post your scratch outline in this discussion.

 

During the week, you are required to provide feedback and critique at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Write a draft of the Definition paragraph. Now that you have developed a scratch outline and received feedback, you are ready to write a rough draft of the definition paragraph. You will post your draft to this discussion.

 

Your paragraph should contain the following:

 

  • Approximately 150-200 words
  • A well-developed topic sentence
  • Adequate detail to support the topic sentence

    Note: Use the “Checklist for Definition,” page 260, when writing your paragraph.

    Post your draft in this discussion. In addition, critique at least three of your classmates’ drafts.

    You will be using this document in the next module. Save it with any name you would like, but the course will refer to the document as the Definition paragraph.

     

     

    PART 3 Module 4 Discussions – Review Common Sentence Errors

    Writing Clear, Error-Free Sentences Part I

    Review Chapter 5, pages 111-130, introduced in Module 3. Then complete Review Tests 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 on pages 131-137. Follow the instructions for each review test. Be sure to use a document (DOC or DOCX). It is recommended that you write out the sentences when appropriate. These exercises will provide more practice in avoiding common sentence errors. These include:

 

  • nonparallel structure
  • inconsistent point of view
  • vague and nonspecific words
  • wordy sentence structure
  • non varying sentences

    Post your document in this discussion. Your instructor will post the answers to these exercises toward the end of the module. Compare your answers and resolve any questions with your instructor.

    Review Chapters 32-35, Section 3 of your textbook. These chapters deal exclusively with punctuation. By this point in the course, you should be aware of your punctuation know-how but may still have questions. Post any questions you may have about material covered in this module.

 

 

 

Using the feedback received from your instructor and peers, revise and edit your definition paragraph. Reminder: this paragraph will define one of the terms listed on page 259.

 

Remember that your paragraph should contain the following:

 

  • Approximately 150-200 words

  • Error-free sentences

    Use the “Checklist for Definition,” page 260, when revising and editing your paragraph. Complete the assignment in a document. Make sure your name is on your document and the file.
