This week’s homework assignment requires that you read Tiersma, Chapters 4 and 5. (Note, this is Tiersma’s book “Legal Language” NOT Solan and Tiersma’s text!) You will also need the document “Samples of Legal Texts” posted below. The assignment is described in detail below under ‘Characteristics of Legalese’.For this assignment you will need to read Chapters 4 and 5 in Tiersma Legal Language and access the examples of legal language that are posted under the title “Samples of Legal Texts”. First read the samples and try to make sense of what they mean; then read Tiersma, Chapters 4 and 5. As you are reading, check which typical examples of “legalese” are illustrated in the samples. When you are done, select minimally 5 characteristics that are illustrated in these samples and for each characteristic do the following:1. Identify the part(s) of the text (it could be from any one of the three texts) that illustrate this typical characteristic of legal language. So, for instance, if you have uncovered an example of a passive, present the passive in the statute.2. Summarize clearly and concisely what Tiersma says about this particular characteristic. Again, if it is the passive: what does Tiersma say about this construction? What are the advantages, disadvantages? Draw connections with the course lecture wherever relevant.3. Discuss whether this particular use of the characteristic is necessary in this example. Again, assuming that one of the 5 characteristics that you highlight is a passive construction, demonstrate that it is important (or NOT necessary) to use the passive in this particular case and provide a reason why.Do this for a total of 5 characteristics.______________there are word and powerpoint you will need them to do the assignment but I have trouble opening the programs.
