\”Making use of the sources in Chapter 13 of Hollitz, your final papers will answer the question, “Is immigration in early 21st-century America the latest chapter in a longer story or something entirely new? What lessons drawn from American history might shed some light on the contemporary debate over immigration?”
Your papers should have the following elements:
First, write an introductory paragraph that clearly summarizes the question, states your answer (your thesis, in other words), and gives a general sense of the evidence you’ll use to support your answer. This portion should be a little less than 1 page in length.
Next, explain how others have answered this question, meaning the authors of Sources 1 and 2 in Chapter 13. Use those to frame the debate over the reasons for mass immigration, its effects on the society and economy of the United States, and the proposed response, whether by government, private citizens, or corporations. This portion should be around 2 pages in length.
Then, clearly state whether or not you agree with either, both, or neither of those interpretations and provide evidence from no fewer than four primary sources to support your argument. No more than two of your sources can be from Sources 8-11, the oral histories. As you introduce evidence, be sure to explain clearly why you’ve chosen it—precisely what it is supposed to illuminate or demonstrate.
Your paper MUST contain both an explanation of how others have addressed your question (or something reasonably close to it) AND a statement of your own answer to that question (in other words, your thesis) supported by primary-source evidence.\”
