How is this place typical of a particular culture or subculture within that community?
Select a place (restaurant, club, store, mall, bar, intersection etc.) and conduct fieldwork then write a paper that answers the following question:
How is this place typical of a particular culture or subculture within that community?
In order to accurately and effectively respond to this question, you will need to establish the attributes of the community, culture or subculture that you will be discussing in your text. Who are they? What are their interests, values or other attributes? You will then need to examine closely and critically the location of your choice. Who are the people who own it, who frequent it? What is the décor? What does it sound like? Finally, you will need to argue to your reader, through the use of specific examples, by making connections between the space and the community, culture or subculture, how the location you have chosen is typical of the community, culture or subculture.
Consider the following questions as you write (keeping in mind that you do not need to answer any or all of the questions throughout the course of your paper):
♦ How is it that certain places come to represent a location or culture?
♦ Can a community make the location a certain way? Or does the location grow to fit the needs of a certain community?
♦ Does the “crowd” make the location? Or does the location create a certain type of “crowd”?
♦ How would people from outside of this community, culture or subculture view the location you have chosen? Would they recognize it as typical of the community, culture or subculture or not?
