You will write a 2 pages paper based on a graphic design of your choosing from the Museum of Modern Art. You will analyze visually the design according to the period when it was created. This is NOT a research paper; however, you must use footnotes or endnotes to cite any specific information borrowed from a textbook, catalogue, website, museum signage, or journal. When writing, here are helpful suggestions to consider:

Medium (what the object is made of): Be attentive to particular kinds of ink, oil, pen, brushstroke, lettering, or ways in which the artist handled the surface that forms the design.

Technique (how the design was made): Notice whether the object was drawn, painted, engraved, digitally made, and how the artist carried out those processes.

Object: Is it a painting, a poster, a photograph, a print? What is the message that we are supposed to understand?

Size: Is it large or small? Is it to be seen from close-up or from far away?

Composition (the arrangement of elements in the work): Is there a focal point in the design? Is the composition legible? Is it crowded, open, varied, repetitious?

Space: Which methods has the artist/designer used to create space or is there a denial of space?

Subject matter: what is going on? What is conveyed in the design?

Artist: if known, do you know the artist? What do you know of him/her?

2 pages minimum of writing, typed using 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced
