Intro:Lesson 5 explores the rich tapestry of African culture by examining the cultural values, beliefs, behaviors, and security challenges ofSub-Saharan Africa, a vast geographic region that stretches from the borders of the Sahara to the Cape of Good Hope. The lesson endswith an examination of Somalia. Readings and videos provide insight into Somalia’s cultural diversity, daunting developmentchallenges, and ongoing security issues.Assignment:The countries of Sub-Saharan Africa face a broad spectrum of security challenges. Which of these challenges is the most troubling tothe people of the region? Using cultural domains and dimensions as well as other aspects of culture specific to the region, explain whythis problem presents the greatest challenge.Research:Culture Matters, co-edited by Lawrence Harrison and the late Samuel P. Huntington, is once again offered for optional reading. Thisbook has provided articles for several lessons in the CS course. When you open the book, go to Chapter 11 and read Thomas S. Weisner’sarticle, “Culture, childhood, and Progress in Sub-Saharan Africa” (pp. 141-157; PDF pp 176-192).
