Fieldwork and Fieldwork Reflection (Due May 14th)
Fifteen hours of field experience working with English language learners or at-risk learners in language acquisition and literacy development is required. You will visit a school and select students to work with. Approximately half of the hours (seven/eight hours) will be spent with an ELL and the rest with an at risk learner.
Every time you work with the student, you will partake in appropriate literacy and language activities. You will be provided with a list of activities in class, which you are free to choose from. Each time you work with a student, you are to have the supervisor or teacher in charge sign your official log sheet. Within the log sheet, you will also indicate the activity/activities that you conducted with the child every time you met. In addition, the supervisor/teacher will fill out an evaluation form at the end of the experience. This paperwork is required for credit from Concordia and New York State.
At the end of your field placement (on May 14th), you will hand in three items: your completed log sheet, evaluation form, as well as a paper about your fieldwork experience. The paper will be about 3 pages in length. You will include the following within your paper:
-A description of the students you worked with (student background and achievement information).
-A description of the activities that you conducted with each student and an explanation of why you selected these activities.
-A reflection on the activities/field experience, targeting the following questions: What did the student gain from the activities? How do you know? What did you learn about literacy/language/culture? You are also free to include any other reflections concerning the activities/field experience.
