Organization/What to include in your essay:
Paragraph 1: Introduce your essay
The last sentence of Paragraph 1 will be a thesis statement that states the main point of the entire essay. We will cover strategies for introductions and thesis statements in class.
Paragraph 2: First point supporting thesis statement
Paragraph 3: Second point supporting thesis statement
Paragraph 4: Third point supporting thesis statement
Paragraphs 2-4 will each be similar to the paragraphs you wrote for the first two writing assignments. They will each begin with a topic sentence introducing the point to be discussed. Because these paragraphs are all in support of the thesis stated in the introduction, the topic sentences for paragraphs 2-4 should use transition phrases such as “One benefit” or “The most important reward.” In each paragraph, the topic sentence will be followed by several sentences of supporting subpoints with examples. End each of these paragraphs with a concluding sentence.
Paragraph 5: Conclude your essay.
Restate your main idea in different words. The concluding paragraph may also answer the questions “So what?” and/or “What’s next?” “So what?” means that you explain the significance of your essay. Why is your topic important? What do you want readers to remember? “What’s next?” means that you suggest areas for further study or for action. Do you want readers to do something as a result of having read your essay?
