DISCUSSION BOARD THAT NEEDS A 150 WORD REPLY # 1

The most important event in Human Services history would have to be the creation of the New Deal. A few years after the stock market

crashed, President Roosevelt knew he had a duty to ensure his people were taken care of and were able to live as comfortably as

possible. With that, he wasted no time in jumping right in and beginning to create programs. He created 15 programs including the CWA

and Civilian Conservation Core, but there is one key program that still reigns on today. The Social Security Act of 1935, which among

other things created old age assistance, unemployment compensation, aid to dependent mothers and children and aid to the blind and

disabled (Martin, 2014). The New Deal not only created aid from its programs but also created career opportunities for those who had to

implement those programs through various offices across the country. It even had preventative programs such as the SEC to ensure that

the stock market wouldn’t crash again. I feel that this was the most important event due to its positive impact on the American people,

the fact that it was able to help the country out of depression, the preventative measures that the program took to help stabilize the

economy and make it so no more crashes of the stock market would happen and the longevity since a great deal of the programs are still

in place and helping America today. I consider President Roosevelt an innovative thinker and a hero to the people for cleaning up the

mess that he was sworn into office with.

Any historical event that is based on Human Services is definitely vital, and had to be done in order for it to expand to the

profession it is today. One event that stood out the most was the “Influences of African American Social Workers”. Understanding the

role of Ida B. Wells, it is obvious she was not in her field for recognition, but only stating what was true, and fighting to correct

those who saw African American males as vicious predators. It was Ida B. Wells who stated, “The negro has suffered far more from the

commission of this crime against the women of his race by the white men than the white race has ever suffered through his crimes”

(Brainy Quote, 2001). Helping African American males was not her only priority, but educating the black community with her newspaper

with articles regarding racism and inequality. That was only the beginning of her many accomplishments, her newspaper business was

followed by the Chicago Association for the Advancement of Colored People, of which she co-founded. This organization was established

to fight for equal education, against racism, and many more marginalized actions that African Americans experienced during that era

(Martin, 2012).Forming that organization become a forefront for many other societies, organizations, sororities to bind as a community

and create more healthcare and opportunities for better education for all who faced discrimination. This human service historical event

is a great example of what this profession stands for; meeting the needs of others by confronting those obstacles and certainly

creating resources that would eliminate injustice (Martin, 2014) p. 4.

The most important event in the history of the human services profession is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)

signed into law March 23, 2010. This act was upheld by the Supreme Court on June 28, 2012. It was formed as a right and not a

privilege. By establishing this act it would help minimize the number of uninsured Americans. The concern and need for this care was to

help society be able to have healthcare at an affordable price. This is a great benefit to society especially during difficult times of

people being without work. “They may lack the skills or education to gain sufficient employment; thus, they may not have health

insurance or earn a good wage “(Martin, 2014 Pg 3). Based on the Congressional Budget it has determined that 94% of Americans can now

afford and have healthcare. President Barack Obama established the 900 billion limit bending the cost curve so that it will reduce the

deficit over 10 years (Rak, 2013). For so many years residents have gone without health insurance. This type of healthcare for the

people was long overdue. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 49.9 million uninsured in the United States in 2010 (Rak,

2013). The great benefit that PPACA offers to society is that insurance companies are prohibited from denying benefits based on

preexisting conditions to residents. PPACA is a great benefit to mankind according to human services because it supports the basic

needs of society by helping people stay healthy.
