Visual Analysis Written Assessment
For this assessment opportunity you will analyse a graphic novel, and write a short paper of 1000 words (three to four typed, double-spaced pages). In this short paper you will use what you have learned in Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics to evaluate a work of graphic fiction. Consult the attached rubric to make sure you are covering the necessary evaluation points.
In your analysis, you will address the following:
The work’s title, author, and publication information.
The basic outline of the work’s plot.
Major characters in the work, and how they contribute to the work, and/or whether these characters are iconic.
The visual style of the comic – how line and motion work, and how transitions work (the six types), and how much action takes place in panels, and between them. Also consider how time is represented.
The work’s theme or larger message, and how it is achieved and expressed in the words/pictures balance in the novel.
Materials for consideration include, Watchmen, or Batman: Year One. You may also, if you have read any other work on this course, select one of them. Additionally, you may choose a graphic novel which you have read previously. Please note, though, that if you do you must attach copies/examples of the work so that your comments about its visual style can be evaluated.
General guidelines for submissions: All work must be typewritten, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pointfont.
