• Explain the thesis of the book

• Very briefly summarize the book

• State your thesis (the argument you will make about the book) on the first page of your paper. Your argument should be a critique of the book (its structure, its content, its facts, and most importantly, its argument).

• Explain how the book should be placed within the larger history of Modern Africa, according to the themes we have discussed in the course.

• Do NOT look up other reviews online or in journals — the review must be comprised of your ideas only.

You must retain a copy of all material you hand in. All words and ideas that are not your own must be in quotation marks or footnoted. The paper must include a bibliography (note: even if you are using one source, every history paper must have a bibliography).
