What you will do:
1. One Original DIGITAL MAPS( Language Problem Map )(at local scale) that maps cultural data relating to real world problems dealing with religion, urbanization, economic or political issues, and a human-environment interaction problem.
2. Contain a descriptive paragraph caption (7-10 sentences, college level writing) which describes the culutral patterns, process and proposed solutions

Direction:
You will be creating a thematic map. Watch this short video (Links to an external site.) which explains what a thematic map is and what it looks like.
How will you make an INDIVIDUAL original map?
In order to make a map you need a base map, and data. You will use a variety of sources such as National Map (Links to an external site.), National Geographic Map Maker (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.), Google Earth (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) (Free download), and ArcGIS Explorer (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) (requires creating a free account) to get base maps and data.
Direction:
1. Choose from the available cultural data and decide what religion, urbanization, economic or political issues, and a human-environment interaction data exists for you to map.
2. Once you have mapped the data you will look for patterns at local and regional.
3. If interesting patterns emerge, then you will want to do some research so you can explain the process or why you see that particular pattern. If no patterns emerge, then you may want to map a different data set or look in a different area (zoom in/out or focus on a different area).
4. Finally you will capture an image of your completed map (or just a screen shot) and import it into a word processing program like word where you can add a title, legend, any labels, a paragraph caption.
Your INDIVIDUAL Maps should (the Language Map)
• Be original, and cite all outside data and sources
• Map a cultural geography problem at the local or regional scale
• Contain a descriptive paragraph caption (7-10 sentences, college level writing) which describes the culutral patterns, process and proposed solutions.
• Contain a scale bar (Links to an external site.), north arrow, and descriptive title.
• Be easy to see and read.

Map Rubric:
1-map Layout : Map includes a title, a north arrow, and scale bar as a 8.5″ X 11″ .doc or .pdf, and is easy to see and read (20 point)
2- Map content: Map is original and displays local or regional scale data illustrating a unique cultural problem.( 40 point)
3- Map Caption: Contains a descriptive paragraph caption (7-10 sentences, college level writing) which thoroughly describes the cultural pattern, problem, process and an innovative proposed solution. Outside source are cited. (40 point)
