This assignment requires you to use a statement by the author of the module chapter on Wuthering Heights as a focused way of discussing the novel. It is concerned with the relationship between the Gothic and the domestic, and you are therefore being asked to show your understanding of the role of genre in BrontÎís text. The question is framed in such a way as to invite a wide-ranging discussion of the novel, so be careful to draw on specific examples from the whole text, and not to confine your discussion to just one part. You will find it useful to think about the following: the ways in which characters are represented; the use of narrative voice and narrative perspective; the structure of the novel; the kinds of language used; whether the narration offers a neutral or critical view of the events and characters depicted. You should also consider the wider significance of the effects of the ëoverlappingí of the Gothic and the realist domestic genres, and what values are attributed to each.
