People Managment
Task 1 – Research
You must review how people are managed in organisations. To do this you will need to find out about:
a) The organisations
Their organisational structure and culture
The leadership styles used
The working environment and working practices, including flexible working
CSR agenda and ethical practices
b) How each of the above impact on people within organisations? Do these factors have an impact on the staff, the teams in the organisation, staff turnover, levels of motivation and/or job satisfaction
c) The workforce
The strategies used to manage people , including how they are adapted to deal with different people’s behaviours and situations
The impacts of different leadership styles on these being managed
How the workforce are developed, including any coaching, mentoring and training opportunities
Task 2 – Report
Prepare a formal report for one of the senior management team to outline your findings. This will be a substantial piece of work in which you provide examples of best practice, outline people management theories and draw on your knowledge of practices within the organisations you have researched. Your findings will enable you to make generic recommendations. You must make sure you include sections on the following:
About the organisation:
a) An explanation of the structure of organisations and how this impacts on people in organisations (AC 1.1).
b) An outline of the culture of organisations and an analysis of how organisational culture impacts on people in organisations (AC 1.2)
c) An analysis of leadership styles and their effects on individuals and teams (AC3.1)
d) What is it like to work for the organisation? Are there good working practices (including flexible working) and a pleasant working environment? (AC 5.1). Explain the benefits of flexible working practices to individuals and organisations(AC 3.2) and, using motivational theories, assess how the working environment impacts on people performance (AC 3.3),
e) What are the ethical practices and CSR agendas in the organisations you have researched? Assess how organisations ethical practices impact on the motivation levels of the staff (AC 3.4) and evaluate how the CSR agenda is used to motivate employees (AC 3.5)
The workforce
f) There are always differences between people within the organisation (eg skills, attitudes, experience). Explain how these differences impact on personal behaviour at work (2.1).
g) How is this dealt with? Analyse the management styles needed to deal with differences in behaviours (AC 2.2).
h) Explain how motivation theories can be applied to developing people (AC 4.1), and the different uses of coaching and mentoring in organisations (AC 4.2).
i) Analyse the benefits of training and development to individuals and organisations (AC 4.3)
j) Review people management strategies used in organisations (AC 5.1) and assess their impact on people (AC 5.2).
Recommendations
Based on your knowledge and understanding of people management theory and practice recommend strategies to promote high levels of performance in the organisation (AC 5.3)
