Lenses of Sustainability
Use three lenses of sustainability to compare and contrast strategic approaches to sustainability.
1. Select an important sustainability issue that impacts Coca-Cola Company. The issue can be an external threat, risk or opportunity or it
can be an internal weakness that is creating a strategic issue hindering or potentially hindering the organization’s sustainability, broadly
defined.
2. Present a description of the issue and why it is important for the organization.
** Be sure to include a good introduction of the company to include: size, number of employees, locations, what businesses the company is in,
how the company is doing financially compared to the recent past, how is the company positioned in its industry and its competitors, and state
whether the company has a sustainable competitive advantage along with providing a description of what it looks like.
(Coca-Cola’s annual report can be obtained on yahoo finance. Also refer to the company’s statements on sustainability)
3. Analyze the issue through the three lenses:
1. Economic – creating organizations and strategies that will lead to economic growth, includes financial profitability, or, for a non-
profit, growth in resources.
2. Social – creating organizations and strategies that sustain people and communities, includes human rights, and respect for people and
communities.
3. Environmental – creating organizations and strategies that sustain natural resources and the environment.
4. After addressing the impact of that issue through the economic (profits), social (people), and environmental (planet) lenses, compare
the implications on organizations and society by viewing the strategic issue through each of those three lenses:
1. How would the strategic plan and planning process be different, depending on the lens?
2. How can leaders implement strategy differently using these three lenses?
3. How can leaders create an integrated approach to considering all three lenses?
4. How would a leader balance change, innovation, responsibility, and the environment in a sustainable strategy?
** Use tables, graphs, charts and comparisons to illustrate the points graphically **
