Kant on the Solution to Hume’s Problem Assignment Sheet
Project description
Kant on the Solution to Hume’s Problem i need an essay about this topic.
In the Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Immanuel Kant wrote:
So I tried first whether Hume’s objection could not be put into a general form, and soon
found that the concept of the connection of cause and effect was by no means the only
concept by which the understanding thinks the connection of things a priori, but rather
that metaphysics consists altogether of such concepts. . . . I proceeded to the deduction
of these concepts, which I was now certain were not derived from experience, as Hume
had tried, but sprang from the pure understanding. (Kant, 5)
DP#3 is an exercise in explicating a text: explain this passage from Kant in your own
words.
A reasonably thorough explication will address what Kant means by the following:
• “Hume’s objection” (see Chapter 7 of the Enquiry Concerning Human
Understanding)
• that “the understanding thinks the connection of things a priori” (see Kant, §2)
• that Hume believed these concepts were derived from experience (see Kant on a
posteriori judgments, §2)
• that these concepts instead “sprang from the pure understanding”
• the distinction between analytic and synthetic knowledge
Be sure to focus your efforts on explaining the passage quoted above. You will need to read
and understand the other assigned sections from the Prolegomena in order to complete this
assignment; if you refer to or quote what Kant says elsewhere, be sure to include a proper
reference to where he says it.
