Play

What would happen if a child were for some reason unable to engage in active play during childhood? What impact would a motor impairment have on child development? Discuss the implications for motor, cognitive and social development. All assignments are to be 3-4 pages (3 page minimum, 4 page maximum – not including title page or references), double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt font. All assignments are due at midnight of their due date. A minimum of 3 peer reviewed reference (e.g. the text books don’t count) is required for each assignment. Referencing must be done in APA style in both the text and the reference list.
The goal of this assignment is to link how active play promotes: motor development, social development and cognitive development.
LINK and explain how the active play facilitates these concepts. In other words how motor development is facilitated by active play, how social development is facilitated by active play and cognitive development and active play.
Pick motor development and one of social or cognitive development as your main examples. Also take into account if you could not engage in active play.
Play Assignment
Play: Any instructed interaction between children-no adult involvement or participation. It is a key aspect to motor, social and cognitive development and learning. Depth perception is innate but the majority of it develops based on experience (learned).
How play affects a person’s social, cognitive and motor development
FMS development
Locomotor, object control, body management skills ex running, jumping, rolling, etc
Development of motor abilities
• Balance
• Coordination
• Motor planning-higher order functions
-anticipating other’s actions
-Decision making

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT AND PLAY
• Problem solving
-What problems might a child encounter in exploring his or her environment? For example a toy getting stuck somewhere and try to solve that problem
=Make believe scenarios: foster creativity and imagination, understanding symbolism, development of abstract thought
? How they evolve a sense of personality

• Sharing and cooperation
INTRODUCTION: paragraph 1
• what is play and why is it important (in general)
• Position statement: early childhood play is important for the optimal development of …..
-Motor function and either social OR cognitive development
-Could choose something specific (eg development of motor planning, motor + social development in children disabilities

Thesis statement- Need a intro “wrap up” sentence, include the examples you will be using in the body paragraphs

Body paragraphs
• Try to be as specific as possible eg motor planning and social development in children with specific disability.
• For each paragraph: consequences of not having play 1. a child that does not play (for example not having siblings) OR 2. Limitations for a kid with disability (want to play but have a limitation and a delay). Short term and long term consequences: hypothesize about these things, predict what would occur.
BODY PARAGRAPHS: 3 paragraphs needed-choose one of the options below
• Option 1: 3 motor examples
• Option 2: motor and cognitive development
1 motor, 2 cognitive
2 motor, 1 cognitive
• Option 3: motor and social development
1 motor, 2 social
2 motor, 1 social
• Must provide 3 well developed examples that illustrate how children learn skills through play
• How and why play is important for the development of motor skills

COUNTER ARGUMENT: paragraph 4
• Consider how someone could argue against the need for play in developing APECIFIC SKILL OR IN A CERTAIN AREA OF DEVELOPMENT.
• Maturationist perspective: eg cognitive skills are innate, children can’t develop them through play
• Skills need to be taught- eg parents need to teach their children what is right and wrong (social skills) ? in this case you can counter this by arguing for both parental teaching AND play, not that one is more important than the other one

• Always come back to your argument to affirm that play IS important in the development of said skill
CONCLUSION:paragraph 5-short paragraph
• summarize your arguments
