Project description
Assignment 1: Business Report
This counts for 60% of the total module mark (TMM).
First:
• Choose a UK or English-speaking company or organisation that you might be interested in working for in the future.
• Research the organisation and perform a SWOT analysis (so that you have become something of an expert on the organisation).
• Choose a business topic or socio-political business issue relevant to your company and frame it as a question or a problem.
• Agree the exact title of your report with your seminar tutor. (This is most important because small linguistic differences can have great significance for achievement and therefore grade.)
And then:
• Using your new-found expertise, provide a ‘solution’ to the problem or issue by creating a business report outlining your findings and drawing conclusions.
• Show clearly how your report links to your research.
Although you may work in groups, each person must submit an individual report entirely in his or her own words.
Students may choose to analyse the problems besetting a company in the private sector or equally a public or voluntary sector organisation (such as a non-governmental organisation or charity).
Recent topics have included Marks & Spencer plc, the Virgin group, the Ford Motor Company, a British film distributor, and Manchester United Football Club.
Examples of current socio-political issues have included:
• conditions for women in business;
• sustainability issues in business;
• the shift towards home-working / tele-commuting
N.B. Students are responsible for choosing the title, but final titles must be approved by Module tutors before starting the report..
One draft should be presented in class for Module Tutor editing.
Knowledge and Skills to be assessed
• Knowledge of UK business culture
• Knowledge of topical business and socio-political issues
• Knowledge of the report format and need for formality
• Use of (academic) research skills in accessing publicly-available information
Grading
Marks are awarded on the basis of
• format
• organisation
• extent of analysis
• quality of language
• content
Your report must go beyond description and explanation. It must take into account a range of opinions and critically analyse and evaluate the merit of each so as to arrive at a reasoned and balanced view about the topic under consideration.
The total length should be around 2,000 words (+ or – 10%), excluding the bibliography and the appendix
