Literature

According to one critic [who is not American], American Literature has 3 characteristics: 1)It reflects beliefs and traditions that

come from the nation’s “frontier days,” highlighting “pioneer ideals of self-reliance and independence” and rejecting authority,

highlighting democracy, and emphasizing the right to eguality. 2) American writers break with literary traditions. 3) A streak of humor

or a reflection that we are capable of laughing at ourselves. To what extent do you think this may or may not be true, given your

knowledge of American authors and writing? What other characteristics would you include?

What do you think might be distinctive voices or styles in early American literature?

What characteristics do you think are most important to make a literary work influential? What makes it “stand the test of time”?

Some critics argue that early American literature was really just British literature, but a few years behind. What arguments might you

make for or against this opinion, at this time?

Given what Targan said in his article, what do you think gives a literary text wide-spread appeal? What detracts from that appeal?

What words, phrases, authors, and/or titles, in your opinion, exemplify the American Literary Tradition? Why? Where do your opinions

differ from your group/partner?

Be sure to include any citations and references, as appropriate.
This is not a essay, you just need to read material and answer the question. Using specific evidence from the texts [yes, this should

include direct quotes].
