History
1. Republicanism opposed arbitrary power (aka kings). How did the ideas of republicanism link private property and the civic good?
2. What role did the Barbary Wars have in the U.S. setting aside the Articles of Confederation and drawing up the Constitution?
3. England and France were locked in battle against each other in the Napoleonic Wars, so the Barbary pirates increased attacks on American ships, we invaded Canada, and the British burned Washington, D.C. How does that make sense?
4. How did the Barbary Wars help us define ourselves as a nation? 5. How did the Barbary Wars change the newly independent United States from vulnerable upstart to a respected power?
6. What did the U.S. do that no European power had been able to do?
7.You will have read about the Revolution – and if you read either of the ìpirateî books, the struggle to turn independence into nationhood – from different perspectives; discuss what each of you contributed to the groupís
overall knowledge in answering the questions about your books. Work with your groupies in Discussion to build an explanation of the Revolutionary period through 1815 that puts it all together. You may use the timelines and key concepts in chapters 4-6 in your text to fill in some of the gaps like the relevance of the French and Indian War and the impact of the Great Awakening on Revolutionary thought. Your explanation should include the important events and major players, and a good indication of the scope of the war. For example, what was the general course of the war? What was each sideís plan? Were there strategic cities or other geographic locations? Where was the war actually fought? How did the Barbary Wars help change us from a collection of troublesome colonies to respected nation?
